The North East

The total cost of alcohol misuse to the NHS in England has been estimated to be as much as £3.5bn a year. Taking the health and criminal justice costs together (alongside associated costs to families and society), the total cost of the illicit drugs trade is now estimated to be over £19 billion a year, which is more than double the estimated value of the illicit drugs market. In totla this equates to over 2% of the natioanl budget.

Drugs

Half of all burglary, theft, shoplifting, and robbery incidents are perpetrated by individuals who regularly use heroin or cocaine. This statistic accounts for one-fifth of the total crimes reported to the West Midlands Police, impacting tens of thousands of victims. Additionally, within the West Midlands, there is a tragic occurrence of drug-related fatalities, with someone succumbing to drug poisoning every three days. This alarming trend extends nationally, with a drug-related death transpiring every four hours across England.

Alcohol

In England and Scotland, 24% of adults exceed low-risk alcohol guidelines, with 27% binge drinking in Great Britain. Abstinence was reported by 20% of the population in 2017, while overall alcohol consumption decreased by 16% since 2004.

In 2020, there were 8,974 alcohol-specific deaths in the UK, an 18.6% increase from 2019. England has approximately 602,391 dependent drinkers, with 82% not receiving treatment.

Alcohol misuse is the primary risk factor for mortality and disability among 15-49 year-olds in the UK. Over the past decade, alcohol has become 13% more affordable than in 2008 and 74% more affordable than in 1987.
